Glossary

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome

A condition of cyclical severe vomiting caused by long-term heavy cannabis use, often temporarily relieved by hot bathing.

CHS typically requires several years of preceding heavy use. Rome IV criteria describe stereotypical episodic vomiting resembling cyclical vomiting syndrome, resolving on sustained cessation of cannabis.

The compulsive hot-shower behaviour is characteristic — one survey found relief with hot bathing in 67% of cases.

The trap is that cannabis normally treats nausea, so people often respond by using more. The only definitive treatment is stopping.

Also written as: chs, hyperemesis, cyclical vomiting.
