Glossary

CB1 receptor

The cannabinoid receptor concentrated in the brain and central nervous system. Direct CB1 binding is what makes THC intoxicating.

CB1 density is highest in regions governing memory, coordination, appetite, and pain processing, which maps closely onto the effects of THC.

CBD does not bind CB1 in the way THC does, which is the structural reason it is not intoxicating.

Also written as: cb1.
