Medical cannabis card

State-issued authorisation to purchase cannabis through a medical program, requiring a qualifying condition and a practitioner certification.

Qualifying conditions, fees, and renewal periods are set by each state. In adult-use states a card can still be worthwhile for higher possession limits, lower taxes, or access to higher-potency products.

Following the April 2026 rescheduling, practitioner certifications rather than prescriptions remain the mechanism in state medical programs.

Also written as: mmj card, medical marijuana card, patient card.
